The Kotilingeshwara Temple, located in Kamalapura village near Kolar, Karnataka, is one of the most unique and remarkable temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name “Kotilingeshwara” translates to “the Lord of a crore Lingas” (Koti = one crore). True to its name, the temple today houses more than one crore Shiva Lingas of various sizes, with new ones being added each year by devotees.
The temple was established in 1980 by Swamy Sambha Shiva Murthy, a devout follower of Lord Shiva. His vision was to build a temple that could inspire devotion and represent the infinite presence of Lord Shiva. He started by installing a few lingas, and with time, the temple grew into a massive spiritual site with contributions from devotees across India and abroad.
The temple’s main attraction is the 108-foot tall Shiva Linga, which is believed to be the tallest in the world.
In front of the Linga stands a 35-foot tall Nandi (the sacred bull), facing Lord Shiva, which adds grandeur to the temple.
The huge Linga and Nandi were constructed to symbolize strength, divinity, and the eternal power of Lord Shiva.
Over the years, the temple became popular not only among locals but also among pilgrims nationwide. Devotees began installing Shiva Lingas in the temple premises, each one symbolizing their offering and devotion to Lord Shiva. Today, the site contains millions of Lingas, arranged neatly across the temple grounds, making it a one-of-a-kind pilgrimage center in the world.
The temple represents the universal presence of Shiva in countless forms.
It is believed that offering prayers here fulfills wishes, brings peace of mind, and helps devotees overcome obstacles in life.
The temple also promotes communal harmony, as people from all religions visit to experience the spiritual energy of the place.
Major festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Mondays (Somvar) attract thousands of devotees.
Today, the Kotilingeshwara Temple is not just a religious site but also a tourist attraction, thanks to its sheer scale and unique concept. Managed by the Kotilingeshwara Trust, the temple continues to grow, with devotees installing new Lingas every year, keeping alive the founder’s vision of reaching one crore Lingas and beyond.
